Irina Bukova, the Bulgarian candidate, was elected Tuesday night to head UNESCO, the UN culture organization. As such, the Egyptian candidate, Farouk Hosny, who was considered the favorite, was not chosen. Bukova beat Hosny by a vote of 31 to 27.

Last year, Hosny threatened to burn Israeli books in Egypt, telling parliament members that he would burn any books he finds himself.
